Step-by-step: How to apply the hard wax oil

Preparation & Sanding

• The surface must be completely clean, dry and free of previous lacquer, varnish or wax residue.
• Sand the wood clean along the direction of the fibers. Start with coarser paper and finish with grain 120.
• Vacuum and wipe off all sanding dust thoroughly before application.

Application – Layer 1

• Make sure the can is at room temperature. Stir thoroughly from the bottom so that the pigments are evenly distributed.
• If you are using multiple cans, make sure they have the same batch number (mix the cans together beforehand to ensure a uniform color).
• Apply the oil in a thin, even layer with a brush, Herdins stain applicator or white scouring pad. Work the oil thoroughly into the wood grain.
• Important: Wipe off any excess immediately with a lint-free cloth. No wet oil should be left on the surface.
• Leave to dry for at least 10 hours.

Application – Layer 2

• Apply a second thin layer in the same way and wipe off any excess oil immediately.
• Note: Never finish with a clear oil on top of pigmented hard wax oil. If you want a weaker color tone, mix pigmented oil with clear hard wax oil in advance and apply two coats of the mixture.
• Leave to dry for at least 12 hours.

Finishing & Curing

• For a silky smooth feel, the surface can be polished with a polishing cloth or white scouring pad.
• The surface can withstand gentle use after 3 days.
• Avoid moisture and heavy loads during the first 12 days until the oil has fully cured.

Care and safety precautions

• Regular cleaning: Clean the surface with lukewarm water and a mild solution of Herdins Linseed Oil Soap. Avoid strong alkaline cleaning agents.
• Spot repair: When the surface feels dry and rough, lightly roughen it with fine sandpaper before applying a new thin layer of hard wax oil.
• Warning for spontaneous combustion: The product contains drying vegetable oils. Rags, lint and scouring pads that have been used must be soaked in water or burned immediately after use to avoid the risk of fire.
• Waste: Leave leftovers at the environmental station as paint waste. Cleaned, dry tin cans are sorted as metal packaging.
