Iron Vitriol With Silver Stain Herdins
Description
Give your wooden facade a timeless, beautiful and weathered expression. Herdins Iron Vitriol is a classic and user-friendly surface treatment that produces the coveted gray patina that wood otherwise only gets after many years in the weather. The mixture contains an added silver stain, which makes the application visible directly on the wood so you can easily see where you have applied. When the surface is then exposed to sun and rain, a durable, natural gray shade develops that blends perfectly into the Nordic nature.
Advantages of Herdins Iron Vitriol
- Authentic wood patina: Gives the wood a timeless, architectural gray tone that blends into the Nordic nature.
- Maintenance-free expression: Does not create a dense paint film that flakes or needs to be scraped in the future.
- Built-in trace color: Added silver stain makes it easy to see where you have already ironed during application.
- High coverage: A compact 300 gram package provides 10 liters of ready-to-use solution.
- Compatible with activator: Can be combined with Herdins Activator if an immediate graying effect is desired.
How to use Herdins Iron Vitriol – Step by Step
Follow these steps to achieve the best possible end result on your wood panel:
Prepare the substrate and environment
Make sure the wood surface is completely dry, clean and free of dirt, mold or previous paint residue. Cover window glass, window sills, foundation walls, concrete slabs and plants carefully. Important: Splashes from iron sulfate cause permanent rust stains on mineral materials and etching on glass.
Mix the solution
- Pour the contents of the package (300 g) into a clean bucket.
- Add about 10 liters of hot water (approx. 60°C).
- Stir thoroughly until all the powder is completely dissolved.
- Pro tip: Add a few drops of regular dishwashing liquid to the liquid. This breaks the surface tension and facilitates the penetration of the solution into dry wood.
Application to the facade
- Use a wide facade brush or a suitable pressure sprayer.
- On standing panels, apply the solution from the bottom up. This prevents excess liquid from running down the dry panel and creating uneven stripes.
- Saturate the wood thoroughly and smooth out any puddles.
Cleaning
Rinse tools, brushes and sprayers immediately with plenty of plain water after finishing smoothing.
Important to consider when using
- Fastening materials: Always use stainless steel nails (A2 or A4) and stainless steel fittings when installing the wood. Regular galvanized nails react with the iron sulfate and can cause dark rust streaks around the nail holes.
- Appearance and color changes under eaves: Surfaces protected from rain and direct sun (for example, under deep eaves) gray more slowly. It is advisable to water these protected surfaces carefully with a water hose after the treatment has dried to help the process on the pile.
- Wood protection: Iron vitriol works primarily as a color reaction and lacks biocides or rot-protective oils. The long-term durability of the wood depends on good constructive wood protection design (good aeration and water drainage).
Safety, storage and environment
- Handling: Handle the powder carefully to avoid dusting. Wear safety glasses and gloves when mixing.
- Storage: Store dry in tightly closed original packaging at normal room temperature. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
- Recycling: Empty and cleaned packaging is sorted as hard plastic/packaging waste according to local regulations.
