The heating cable is automatically controlled and activated when the outdoor temperature drops to plus 2 degrees Celsius, and switched off when the temperature rises above plus 2 degrees Celsius. Condensation water formed during the heat pump's defrost cycles needs to be safely drained away to avoid ice building up around the outdoor unit or on the ground below.
