NIBE PCM S40 is a complete and technically advanced cooling module that delivers comfortable passive cooling in the property during the warmer months of the year. The unit is connected directly to a ground source heat pump in the intelligent NIBE S series and takes advantage of the natural coolness stored in the bedrock via the collector circuit. This process creates an even and comfortable indoor climate all year round at a fraction of the operating cost compared to traditional air conditioning systems.

How passive cooling (free cooling) works in practice

The principle is based on so-called free cooling, where the heat pump's compressor does not need to work actively to generate coolness. Instead, the cool borehole fluid is circulated through the unit's plate heat exchanger, which cools down the circulating water in the underfloor heating coils or connected fan coils. This means that only the circulation pumps consume electricity, resulting in a very quiet, economical and gentle cooling system.

Recharging the borehole for improved annual heating factor

Cooling the property via the rock provides a double environmental benefit. The heat transported away from the house's rooms during the summer is conducted down into the borehole and recharges the bedrock with energy. This natural temperature increase in the rock optimizes the system's efficiency for the coming winter season, which contributes to a higher heating factor (SCOP) and reduced total energy consumption over time.

The module is factory-assembled and contains an integrated circulation pump, efficient intermediate exchanger and the necessary connections for easy installation next to the heat pump. The system is dimensioned for 2-pipe cooling and is available in two size variants to suit different power classes within the NIBE S series. The casing is made of robust metal with a white, durable surface finish that harmonizes with other technical equipment in the boiler room.

As a natural part of the NIBE S series, the cooling function is conveniently configured and controlled directly from the heat pump's color touchscreen or via mobile phone and tablet. The integrated control senses the prevailing indoor temperature and humidity conditions to dynamically adjust the cooling effect, which counteracts condensation on floor surfaces and ensures maximum living comfort without manual hassle.
