Description

Herdins Oil Stain Medium Brown is a user-friendly, ready-to-use stain solution consisting of pigmented oils and aliphatic white spirit. The product colors and conditions the wood in a single step and provides an even color with a soft, tactile wood feel and a pleasant satin finish.

Unlike Herdins Äkta stain or Lackbets, the oil stain is slightly less transparent, which gives a more uniform color. It has a longer open time than lacquer-based stains, which makes it soft, pliable, durable and extremely easy to work with – especially on large surfaces. An oil-stained surface provides good basic protection and is very easy to repair: just sand off the damaged area and apply new oil stain.

Important to consider before use

• Stirring: Always stir the bottom of the can thoroughly with a stirring stick until the product is completely mixed. Simply shaking the can is not enough.
• Color batches: If you are using several cans of the same color, mix them together in a container before starting the treatment to ensure an even shade.
• White oil stain / Antique white: White oil stain can turn yellow due to the influence of the substrate and the natural color change of the oil components. If you are going to stain a floor, the color Antique white is not recommended (especially in combination with a finishing treatment such as Floor varnish), instead choose other suitable floor products.

Instructions for use & Application

Pre-treatment

For a good result, a well-sanded surface free of dirt and defects is required.

• New wood: Sand in the direction of the grain with grain size 120 or similar.
• Painted surfaces: Must be sanded completely clean of wood.
• Previously oiled surfaces: Sand lightly.
• Paint remover (stripper): Clean the surface thoroughly from all medium residues with soap solution or alkaline cleaning agent. Rinse thoroughly with water, let dry and sand away any raised fibers.
• Damage: Fill holes and defects in the wood as necessary.

Application

The wood should preferably lie flat during work. If you are working on vertical objects, start from the bottom and work your way up. When staining ceiling or wall panels, it is recommended to stain the boards before installation. Always smooth the tongue and groove, as wood moves even after installation.

• Stir the oil stain thoroughly.
• Work the oil stain in with a cloth, brush or cellulose sponge.
• Wipe away any excess in the direction of the wood grain.
• Let dry for 12 hours at room temperature.
• For darker tones: When the surface has dried, lightly sand it with fine sandpaper, brush off all sanding dust and apply a second coat.

Finishing

Let the oil stain cure for at least 24 hours before over-applying finishing product.

• Indoors (Normal wear): Finish with Herdins Kitchen Countertop Oil, Herdins Beeswax or Herdins Wax Oil.
• Indoors (Normal to heavy wear): Refinish with Herdins Hard Wax Oil, Herdins Clear Varnish, Herdins Clear Varnish Aqua or Herdins Floor Varnish.
• Outdoors: Refinish with Herdins Chinese Wood Oil, Herdins Teak Oil or Herdins Wood Oil.

Maintenance

Oil-stained surfaces and surfaces that have been refinished with Wax Oil require regular maintenance. When the surface starts to feel dry and rough, it should be refinished with a suitable finishing product according to the list above.

Cleaning, Safety & Waste Management

• Cleaning of tools: Wipe off brushes and utensils as thoroughly as possible. Then clean the tools with brush cleaner or white spirit.
• Safety - Risk of Spontaneous Ignition: The product contains drying oils. There is a high risk of spontaneous ignition in soaked rags, lint, steel wool, etc. Always put used rags and lint in water or burn them immediately after use.
• Storage: Reseal opened can tightly.
• Disposal: Empty cans should be taken to the local waste disposal station for recycling. Liquid oil pickling residue and washing liquid are flammable waste – do not pour this down the drain, but take it to the waste disposal station.
