Description

Herdins Oil Stain Iron Vitriol (275 ml, article number 055904) colors and cares for your wood in one step. It is a ready-made stain solution consisting of pigmented oils and aliphatic white spirit that provides a natural, smooth and pleasant satin-matt surface with a soft and tactile wood feel.

Unlike Herdins Äkta stain and Herdins Lackbets, the oil stain is not as transparent, which provides a more uniform coloring and good basic protection. With a longer open time than lacquer-based stains, it is incredibly easy to work with, soft, flexible, durable and perfect for larger surfaces such as ceilings, panels and floors. An oil-stained surface is also very easy to repair - just sand the damaged area and apply new oil stain.

Suitable Substrates

Perfect for large and small surfaces of new or cleanly sanded wood, both indoors and outdoors. Excellent for coloring untreated furniture, joinery, panels, moldings, ceilings and floors indoors.

Instructions for use & Step-by-Step Guide

Pre-treatment

• A good result requires that the surface is well sanded and completely clean of dirt and defects.
• New wood: Sand in the direction of the grain with 120-grit sandpaper (or similar) to create a good substrate.
• Lacquered surfaces: Must be sanded completely clean of the wood.
• Previously oiled surfaces: Sand lightly.
• When removing paint (stripper): Clean the surface thoroughly from all agent residues with soapy water or alkaline cleaning agent. Rinse thoroughly with water, let dry and sand away any raised fibers.
• Fill any holes in the wood if necessary.

Application

• Important about stirring: Always stir the bottom of the can thoroughly with a stirring stick until the product is completely mixed. Simply shaking the can is not enough!
• Work in the oil stain with a cloth, brush or cellulose sponge.
• Wipe off the excess in the direction of the wood grain.
• Leave to dry for about 12 hours at room temperature.
• For darker tones: When the surface has dried, lightly matt with fine sandpaper, brush off the sanding dust and apply another coat.
• Working technique: The wood should preferably lie flat. For vertical objects, start from the bottom and work your way up. When staining ceiling and wall panels, it is recommended to do this before installation. Also smooth the tongue/edge as wood may move after installation.

Finishing

• Let the oil stain cure for at least 24 hours before over-applying finishing product.
• Indoors (Normal wear): Finish with Herdins Kitchen Countertop Oil, Herdins Beeswax or Herdins Wax Oil.
• Indoors (Normal to heavy wear): Finish with Herdins Hard Wax Oil, Herdins Clear Coat, Herdins Clear Coat Aqua or Herdins Floor Coat.
• Outdoor: Finish with Herdins Chinese Wood Oil, Herdins Teak Oil or Herdins Wood Oil.

Maintenance

Oil-stained surfaces and surfaces treated with Wax Oil require regular maintenance. When the surface starts to feel dry and rough, it should be treated again with a suitable finishing product according to the list above.

Important to remember (Safety & Tips)

• Spontaneous ignition risk: The product contains drying oils. There is a high risk of spontaneous combustion of soaked rags, tangles, steel wool, etc. Used rags and materials must be immediately placed in water or set on fire!
• Mixing cans: If you have purchased several cans of the same color, it is recommended that you mix them together in a container before starting work.
• Yellowing: White oil stain may turn yellow slightly due to the influence of the substrate and the natural color change of the oil components.
• Floor treatment: When treating wooden floors, the color Antikvit is not recommended, as the surface may turn yellow in combination with finishing products such as Floor varnish. Instead, choose other products adapted for wooden floors.

Cleaning, Handling & Waste Management

• Cleaning tools: Wipe brushes and utensils thoroughly. Then clean in brush wash or white spirit.
• Storage: Reseal opened cans well.
• Waste management: Empty tin cans are handed over to the local environmental station for recycling. Liquid oil stain residues and washing liquid constitute flammable waste - do not pour into the drain, but take to an environmental station.
