Description

Herdins Oil Stain Mahogany (275 ml) colors and cares for your wood in one step. The pigmented oil solution penetrates deep into the wood fibers and provides a beautiful, natural mahogany tone with a soft, satin finish and a pleasant, tactile feel. Unlike traditional alcohol- and water-based stains, this oil stain has a longer open time, making it soft, pliable and extremely easy to work with on both small and large surfaces without the risk of quick drying joints.

The product provides effective basic protection and creates an even color on both new and sanded wood indoors and outdoors. This makes it a versatile, affordable and reliable choice for everything from furniture, joinery and moldings to wall panels, ceilings and wooden floors. In addition, the stained surface is easy to maintain and repair over time if damage should occur.

Properties and Benefits of Herdins Oil Stain

• Even color: Provides a more even color compared to transparent water- or alcohol-based stains (such as Herdins Äkta stain or Lackbets) and provides good basic protection.
• Long open time: Dries slower than lacquer-based stains, which makes it soft, pliable, durable and ideal for larger surfaces such as wooden floors.
• Easy to repair: Damaged surfaces only need to be sanded locally and new oil stain applied.
• Versatile: Works on new, sanded or previously lightly sanded wooden surfaces both indoors and outdoors.

Instructions for use

Pre-treatment

• The surface must be well sanded and completely free of dirt and defects.
• New wood: Sand in the direction of the grain with grain size 120 (or similar).
• Varnished surfaces: Sand completely clean.
• Previously oiled surfaces: Sand lightly.
• When removing paint (stripper): Clean thoroughly with soap solution or alkaline detergent and rinse thoroughly with water. Allow to dry and sand away any raised fibers.
• Fill any holes in the wood if necessary.

Stirring

• Always stir the bottom of the can thoroughly with a stirring stick until the product is thoroughly mixed. Simply shaking the can is not enough.
• Tip: If you are using several cans of the same color, mix them together before starting the treatment to ensure a completely even shade.

Application

• Work in the oil stain with a cloth, brush or cellulose sponge.
• Wipe away any excess in the direction of the wood grain.
• Leave to dry for approx. 12 hours at room temperature.
• For darker tones: Matt the surface lightly with fine sandpaper, brush off the sanding dust and apply another coat.
• Working technique: The wood should preferably be flat. When working on vertical surfaces, start from the bottom and work upwards. When staining ceiling or wall panels, treatment is recommended before assembly (remember to also smooth tongue and groove edges as wood can move).

Finishing

Let the oil stain cure for at least 24 hours before over-applying with finishing product.

For indoor use:

• Normal wear: Finish with Herdins Kitchen Countertop Oil, Herdins Beeswax or Herdins Wax Oil.
• Normal to heavy wear (e.g. floors/tables): Treat with Herdins Hard Wax Oil, Herdins Clear Lacquer, Herdins Clear Lacquer Aqua or Herdins Floor Lacquer.

For outdoor use:

• Finish with Herdins Chinese Wood Oil, Herdins Teak Oil or Herdins Wood Oil.

Maintenance & Cleaning

• Maintenance: Oil-stained surfaces (as well as surfaces treated with Wax Oil) require regular maintenance. When the surface starts to feel dry and rough, it should be re-treated with one of the recommended finishing products.
• Cleaning tools: Wipe brushes and utensils thoroughly. Then clean in brush wash or mineral spirits.

Special notes:

• White oil stain can turn yellow over time due to the influence of the substrate and the natural color change of the oil components.
• When treating wooden floors, it is not recommended to use the color Antikvit together with finishing (such as Floor Lacquer), as the combination can cause yellowing. In that case, choose other products from the Herdins floor range.
• Handling & Storage: Reseal opened cans well.
• Waste management: Empty tin cans should be handed over to the local environmental station for recycling. Liquid residues and washing liquid constitute flammable waste and must not be poured down the drain, but must be taken to an environmental station.
