Description

Herdins Oil Stain Tar 275 ml is a user-friendly, pigmented oil that gives an even, natural stain shade and a pleasant satin-matt surface. It colors and cares for the wooden surface in a single step and provides good basic protection while maintaining a soft and tactile wood feel.

The oil stain has a longer open time than varnish-based stains, which makes it soft, pliable, thick and very easy to work with – especially on large surfaces such as ceilings and floors. Unlike Herdins Äkta bets or Herdins Lackbets, the oil stain is not as transparent, which gives a more even color. An oil-stained surface is also easy to maintain and repair: just sand the damaged area and apply new oil stain.

Herdins Oljebets is suitable for coloring new or sanded wood on both large and small surfaces indoors and outdoors. It is excellent for untreated furniture, joinery, panels, moldings, ceilings and floors. The oil stain is available in a total of 11 different colors.

Instructions for use & Application

Pre-treatment

A good result requires that the surface is well sanded and clean of dirt and defects.

• New wood: Sand in the direction of the grain with 120-grit sandpaper or similar to provide a good base for the oil stain.
• Varnished surfaces: Should be sanded completely clean of the wood.
• Previously oiled surfaces: Sand lightly.
• Using paint stripper: Clean the surface thoroughly of all residue with soapy water or alkaline detergent. Rinse thoroughly with water, let dry and sand away any raised fibers.
• Repair: Fill holes in the wood if necessary.

Application

• Stirring (Remember): Always stir the bottom of the can with a stirring stick until the product is thoroughly mixed. Simply shaking the can is not enough.
• Mixing multiple cans: If you have purchased multiple cans of the same color, we recommend that you mix them together before starting the treatment.
• Application: Work in the oil stain with a cloth, brush or cellulose sponge. Wipe off the excess in the direction of the wood grain.
• Working position: The wood should preferably lie flat when you work. If you have to work on a vertical object, start from the bottom and work your way up. If you are going to stain ceiling or wall panels, it is advisable to do so before installation. Keep in mind that wood can "move" even after installation - therefore always sand the tongue and groove or edge as well.
• Darker tone / Extra layer: If a darker stain tone is desired, the surface can be treated a second time when it has dried (approx. 12 hours). First, lightly matt the surface with fine sandpaper, brush off the sanding dust and apply the next layer.

Finishing & Maintenance

Let the oil stain cure for at least 24 hours before over-applying with finishing products.

• Indoors (Normal wear): Finish with Herdins Kitchen Countertop Oil, Herdins Beeswax or Herdins Wax Oil.
• Indoors (Normal to heavy wear): Finish with Herdins Hard Wax Oil, Herdins Clear Lacquer, Herdins Clear Lacquer Aqua or Herdins Floor Lacquer.
• Outdoors: Finish with Herdins Chinese Wood Oil, Herdins Teak Oil or Herdins Wood Oil.
• Maintenance: Oil-stained surfaces and surfaces treated with Wax Oil require maintenance. When the surface starts to feel dry and rough, treat it again with one of the finishing products above.

Important NOTES & Safety Precautions

• Risk of spontaneous combustion: The product contains drying oils. There is a high risk of spontaneous combustion of soaked rags, tangles, steel wool, etc. Always put used rags and tangles in water or burn them immediately after use.
• Color changes / Yellowing: White oil stain may yellow slightly due to the influence of the substrate and the natural color change of the oil components.
• Floor treatment: If you are going to treat your wooden floor with oil stain, we do not recommend the color Antique White, because the surface may yellow slightly if you combine Antique White with a finishing product (for example, Floor Lacquer). In that case, choose one of our other products for wooden floors.

Handling, Storage & Disposal

• Storage: Reseal opened can tightly.
• Cleaning of tools: Wipe brushes and utensils as thoroughly as possible. Then clean the tools in brush cleaner or white spirit.
• Waste management: Empty cans should be taken to the local environmental station for recycling. Liquid oil stain residues and washing liquid constitute flammable waste and must not be poured down the drain, but should be taken to an environmental station.
