Description

Herdins Genuine Stain Dark Oak is a traditional, water-soluble dye in powder form developed for clean wood surfaces. Since the product is completely free of binders, the color pigments penetrate deep into the wood fibers without hiding its natural structure. The result is a clear, transparent coloration with a depth and luster that highlights the grain to the maximum.

The stain can be adapted as needed: increase or decrease the amount of water to adjust the color strength, or mix it with any of the other 24 colors in the series to create a unique shade.

Prepare the surface

• Make sure the wood is clean, dry and completely free of old paint and varnish residues.
• Lightly wipe the surface with a damp sponge to raise the wood fibers (add a little washing-up liquid for oily types of wood).
• Let dry and sand lightly with fine sandpaper in the direction of the grain.
• Fill in any unevenness with a matching repair filler and sand evenly.
• Lightly moisten the surface and end wood with water just before staining for an even color result without spots.

Mix the stain solution

• Pour the powder into a heat-resistant glass or plastic container (avoid sheet metal).
• Dissolve in 0.25–1 liter of boiling water while stirring, adjusted to the desired color strength.
• Mix the entire amount immediately to avoid color shifts.
• Let the solution cool completely to room temperature before application.

Test stain

• Always test on a scrap piece of the same type of wood or on a hidden surface.
• Let the sample dry completely to assess the final result, as the wood's own tone affects the shade.
• Adjust the color if necessary with more water for a lighter tone or more pigment for a darker one.

Apply the stain

• Wear protective gloves and, if possible, place the surface flat so that the stain does not run.
• Choose a tool according to the surface: brush for details, sponge or lint-free cloth for larger areas.
• Apply generously in the direction of the grain and immediately smooth out the excess with a sponge or brush.
• Work from the bottom up on vertical surfaces.
• Also apply to tongue and groove and edges, as the wood naturally moves.

Finish and seal

• Let the surface dry undisturbed for at least 6–8 hours at approximately 20 °C.
• Seal with Herdins Clear Coat to bind the pigments and prevent color precipitation.
• Avoid water-based clear coats as they dissolve the pigments and give a patchy result.
• Clean the tools thoroughly with plain water after use.
• Store leftover solution in a dark and cool place in a tight plastic or glass container.
