Genuine Stain Powder 65 Dark Walnut Herdins
Description
Herdins Genuine Stain in Dark Walnut is the obvious choice for fine carpenters, renovation enthusiasts and furniture caretakers who place the highest demands on the end result. Unlike ready-made stains, Genuine Stain contains no binder, resulting in an unmatched transparency and luster where the natural character, structure and grain of the wood are fully highlighted. The product is delivered as a water-soluble dye powder that is easily mixed with boiling water. This gives you full control: adjust the shade and color strength by changing the amount of water or applying multiple coats.
Benefits & Key Features
- Maximum color depth & transparency: No binders, which provides a clean and clear color without hiding the wood's pattern.
- Adjustable color strength: Dilute with more or less water to tailor exactly the shade of dark walnut you want.
- Intermixable: Can be combined freely with the other 23 colors in Herdins Äkta Bets series.
- Possibility of alcohol staining: Can be mixed with red spirit/ethanol for more difficult colorings for faster evaporation and more even absorption.
- High coverage: One ready-mixed liter is enough for a full 6–8 m².
Step-by-step: How to succeed with your staining
Preparation & mixing
- Dissolve the powder: Pour the contents of the bag into ¼–1 liter of boiling water while stirring (see table/label for standard recommendation).
- Cool down: Let the solution cool completely to room temperature before application.
- Mix everything at once: Mix enough stain for the entire project at the same time to ensure a completely uniform color.
Pre-treatment (Pre-treatment of the wood)
A uniform result requires careful pre-treatment:
- The wood must be completely clean of old paint, dirt, grease and varnish residues. Sand the surface thoroughly.
- Reduce grain raising: Rinse the surface with clean water before staining. When the surface has dried, lightly sand the raised fibers with fine sandpaper.
- Even absorption: Soft areas and end wood absorb more stain than hard parts. Lightly moistening the surface just before staining reduces the risk of blotches and color shifts.
- Resin-rich woods: When staining fatter wood such as pine, you can add a drop of washing-up liquid to the pre-water for better wetting.
- Filler: Use a wood filler that matches dark walnut and carefully sand away any excess.
Application
- Do a color sample: Always test on a scrap piece of the same type of wood or a hidden surface to check the color.
- Working method: Apply the stain liberally in the direction of the wood grain with a brush, sponge or lint-free cloth. Work quickly and then smooth out excess with a wiped brush or wrung out sponge.
- Placement: If possible, let the object lie flat. If you have to work on a vertical surface (e.g. a standing panel), always work from the bottom up to avoid drips.
- Protection: Use protective gloves to avoid discoloring your hands.
Mandatory finishing (Clear Varnish)
Because Äkta Bets does not contain binders, the pigment lies freely in the surface of the wood and will stain if it is not sealed.
- Let the stain dry for at least 6–8 hours at approximately 20 °C.
- Seal the surface with Herdins Clear Varnish (solvent-based).
- Important: Do not use water-based varnish, as the water will dissolve the stain dye again, which can result in a patchy result and incorrect color.
Expert tip: Alcohol stain
If the substrate is difficult to stain evenly with just a water solution, you can do a so-called alcohol stain:
- Dissolve the powder in ¾ of the recommended amount of water.
- Then add T-red/ethanol to the remaining ¼ of the amount.
- This further reduces fiber raising and facilitates penetration into hardwoods.
Storage & Environment
- Storage: Store unopened bags in a dry place in the original packaging. Store leftover mixed stain solution in a dark and cool place in a tight glass or plastic container (avoid tin cans).
- Tools: Wipe off excess stain with a cloth before cleaning with water.
- Waste: Dispose of leftovers at your local recycling center according to applicable municipal regulations.
